The Book of Basketball – Bill Simmons

After years of listening to the BS Report podcast, I knew I had to read this book as soon as I could. And I wasn’t let down in the least! There is an unbelievable amount of information on the history of the NBA in this book, which includes a list of the finest players that spans more than 300 pages!
There are also entertaining parts such as “The What-if game,” He delves into hypothetical scenarios such as “What if Detroit chose Carmelo Anthony over Darko Milicic?” For example, consider the question “What if Len Bias hadn’t overdosed?” and another where he solves the debate “Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell?”
It might become a little boring at times since you will be inundated with player statistics and pop culture allusions from all over the world, which can be challenging to keep up with if you are younger or didn’t grow up in the United States of America. Overall, this is the ideal book for anybody interested in learning more about the history of the NBA and the sport of basketball in the United States in general!

Pacific Rims – Rafe Bartholomew

What if I told you that the Philippines is, maybe, the most basketball-crazy nation on the planet? I had no notion about it till I read this book! “Pacific Rims” chronicles Rafe Bartholomew’s voyage across the island, where he discovers the country’s passion for basketball while also gaining some incredibly intriguing insights into the culture of the country.
An entire season is spent inside the locker room of a professional basketball team, he speaks with politicians who promise brand new basketball courts to poor areas in exchange for votes, and he follows a traveling basketball show similar to the Harlem Globetrotters (except they don’t play Globetrotters vs. Generals, they play Transsexuals against Globetrotters!)
This book is a must-read if you are interested in

The Last Shot – Darcy Frey

Book of the Month “The Last Shot” is a novel about life on the playgrounds of Coney Island, a neighborhood that is plagued by crime, poverty, and despair. In such a circumstance, basketball becomes the only hope for escaping this existence, obtaining a college degree, or earning substantial money in the NBA.
Follow the lives of four teenage basketball players who have been gifted with a great deal of physical ability, discipline, and the unwavering will to make it out of the ghetto. It depicts their battle with limited educational opportunities, difficult family conditions, and the cruel world of college recruitment in which they find themselves.
It is likely that you like the basketball documentary “Hoop Dreams” and that you will enjoy this book as well.

Brave Dragons – Jim Yardley

In this documentary, former NBA coach Bob Weiss tells the tale of his attempts to instill the NBA’s basketball style in the poorest squad in Chinese basketball history. Things don’t exactly turn out the way they should in this situation.
This is a fascinating insight into Chinese culture and what occurs when one attempts to introduce American individuality to a nation that has been highly influenced by communism and where collectivism is the norm. This book is less about the day-to-day activities of a basketball coach and more about how other cultures and ways of thinking influence the basketball game, as described by the author.
This exciting book gave me a unique perspective on a foreign place via the prism of something I was acquainted with (basketball). The country in question is very different from western countries.

Can I Keep My Jersey – Paul Shirley

Paul Shirley initially came to my attention when he created a blog for the Phoenix Suns during the 2004-2005 NBA season. I was impressed. As a twelfth player, he had little opportunity to contribute, but he gave an immensely fascinating and candid view behind the scenes of the NBA. Bill Simmons Page 2 on ESPN subsequently published his articles, which included team and player news, cheerleaders, and even things outside of the sports world.
During his first book, “Can I retain my jersey,” he recounts his experiences as a professional basketball player in nations such as Russia, China, Greece, and Spain, among others. He visits several places, learns about basketball ideologies, and attends a Russian Christmas party with two male dancers.
It’s the perfect book for everyone who has ever pondered what it would be like to have a professional basketball player buddy.

The Mamba Mentality – Kobe Bryant

It’s a pleasure to read this large-format coffee-table book since it provides a good glimpse into Kobe’s love of basketball and his rigorous study of his trade.
It is not a standard biography but rather a series of breathtaking images taken by Hall of Fame photographer Andrew D. Bernstein and small self-contained anecdotes about the people in the photographs. The measures Kobe took to prepare emotionally and physically, analyze his opponents, and perform through ailments will all be covered in this documentary!
This book provides an unparalleled insight behind the scenes of Kobe’s professional basketball career and is a must-read for every Kobe fan!

The Dream Team – Jack McCallum

The NBA sent its players to the Olympic Games for the first time in 1992, resulting in the formation of the Dream Team. With Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley on the roster, it was (and continues to be) the team with the most incredible talent collected in one place.
Jack McCallum had the unique chance to accompany the Dream Team on their travels and recounts his observations of what took on at training, games, and locker rooms.
The topics covered are how the players were chosen, why Isiah Thomas was left off the team, and the famed intra-squad game labeled “The greatest game anyone ever watched” by the press.
In addition, if you can’t get enough of the most outstanding basketball team of all time, you should listen to Jack McCallum’s podcast “The Dream Team Tapes.”

Basketball (and Other Things) – Shea Serrano

Shea Serrano is a multi-talented individual, a podcast presenter, a writer for Bill Simmon’s “The Ringer,” and a highly prominent Twitter figure with over 400.000 followers.
When asked questions such as “What year was Michael Jordan the best version of Michael Jordan?” or “Who’s the greatest dunker in NBA history?” or “How many points should [shot] genuinely be worth?” his third book provides unorthodox, entertaining, and intelligent responses.
With its clever humor, exquisite illustrations by Arturo Torres, and a reading recommendation from former President Barack Obama, this book quickly became a #1 New York Times bestseller. It was first published in 2017.

SprawlBall – Kirk Goldsberry

There has been a significant shift in how the NBA distributes shots in recent years. Mid-range jumpers are almost prohibited, and forward-thinking clubs such as the Houston Rockets attempt to concentrate on layups and three-pointers.
Kirk Goldsberry charts the contemporary basketball revolution with spectacular graphics, in-depth analysis, amusing behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and fascinating trivia.
It’s the ideal book for you if you’re a basketball junkie like me and you adore statistics and analytics.

The Breaks of the Game – David Halberstam

Who am I to disagree with Bill Simmons when he believes this is the finest sportsbook of all time?
In addition to being a Pulitzer Prize winner, David Halberstam has written more than 20 books on American life and history; almost all of them have been best-sellers.
The documentary “Breaks of the Game” focuses on one tough season (1979-80) in the existence of the Bill Walton-led Portland Trail Blazers, a club that had won the NBA championship just three years previously. Follow Blazers Hall of Fame head coach Jack Ramsay attempts to lead a failing team through injuries, selfishness among players, pay disputes, and team chemistry issues, among other challenges.
This book is a great classic, and it is a must-read for every lover of the National Basketball Association’s history.

Miracle of St.Anthony – Adrian Wojnarowski

Nowadays, Adrian Wojnarowski is perhaps the most well-connected reporter in the world of basketball, and he is well-known for his Woj-bombs, in which he tweets the most recent deals and news from the National Basketball Association.
In 2006, he published one of the finest basketball novels ever written, which chronicled the efforts of Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley to guide a dysfunctional team through a riveting and heartbreaking season at St. Anthony High School.
This book reads like a novel – once you start reading it, it will be difficult to put down.

Basketball: A Love Story – Jackie McMullan, Rafe Bartholomew & Dan Klores

In this book, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Dr. J, and many more basketball luminaries share their stories about basketball, which are conveyed via interviews with the icons themselves.
There are chapters devoted to the NBA, college basketball, women’s basketball, and even the ABA is covered in the book. Because each chapter is brief and self-contained, you can pick up this book at any moment and read only a few pages without becoming lost in the story. Fans of the game will devour the inside tales from the legends from that period as if they were listening in on the making of basketball history.
Anyone who likes the game should read this book!

Eleven Rings – Phil Jackson

Phil Jackson is widely regarded as the finest coach in the history of the NBA, having won six championships with Michael Jordan’s famous Chicago Bulls and another five with Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers.
Throughout this book, Phil takes you through each championship season, beginning to a conclusion, and provides you with a whole new perspective on what it takes to win a championship in the sports world. Discover the parallels and differences between Kobe and Jordan, the origins of the Kobe / Shaq hate, and how Phil assembled a group of people into championship teams in this documentary.
This episode will also cover Zen Buddhism, Phil’s leadership style, and other topics.

Tanking to the Top – Yaron Weitzman

Sam Hinkie served as the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers from 2013 to 2016, during which time he managed what became known as “the process” in the NBA.
For years, the club purposely lost as many games as possible as part of a daring strategy to get to the top of the standings by being the worst.
Ultimately, this technique resulted in high draft choices that became superstars, such as Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, and low lottery picks that went on to become disappointments, such as Markelle Fultz and Jahlil Okafor.
Hinkie was forced out of his position less than three years after taking over as president by a disenchanted owner, a jealous CEO, and a humiliated National Basketball Association.
Tanking to the Top, which is based on interviews with almost 175 individuals, brings to life the palace intrigue sparked by Hinkie’s proposition, transporting readers inside the boardroom where the Sixers lay out their plans and onto the court where those plans were put into action.

Loose Balls – Terry Pluto

Phil Jackson is widely regarded as the finest coach in the history of the NBA, having won six championships with Michael Jordan’s famous Chicago Bulls and another five with Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers.
Throughout this book, Phil takes you through each championship season, beginning to a conclusion, and provides you with a whole new perspective on what it takes to win a championship in the sports world. Discover the parallels and differences between Kobe and Jordan, the origins of the Kobe / Shaq hate, and how Phil assembled a group of people into championship teams in this documentary.
As well as learning about Zen Buddhism, Phil’s leadership style, and how he dealt with tough people on his teams, you’ll get a better understanding of the man himself.
If you are even the slightest bit interested in the history of the NBA, this is a must-read!

Seven Seconds or Less – Jack McCallum

The Phoenix Suns of the 2005-2006 season were one of the most entertaining teams in NBA history. The Suns’ run-and-gun offense, directed by two-time MVP Steve Nash and coach Mike D’Antoni, was the best regarding points per game, field goal percentage, and three-point attempts.
An exciting look at how coach Mike D’Antoni and his staff guided an injury-plagued team to a spot in the Western Conference Finals is provided by Jack McCallum, who spent the whole season as an “assistant coach.” Having access to everything from locker room conversations to coaches’ meetings gives us a unique perspective on how an NBA team operates in real life.

The Three Ring Circus – Jeff Pearlman

In the narrative of the Los Angeles Lakers dynasty from 1996 to 2004, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal worked together—and collided—to help the Lakers win three consecutive championships and return the team to its former glory.
Three-Ring Circus follows in the footsteps of Jeff Pearlman’s previous best-sellers Showtime, Boys Will Be Boys, and The Bad Guys Won, and is a boisterous, in-depth look at one of the sports’ most contentious but ultimately successful teams.

The Jordan Rules – Sam Smith

Sam Smith was prominently featured in the excellent ESPN documentary series ′′The Last Dance′′ about Michael Jordan’s last season with the Chicago Bulls, which aired in 2011.
His book, “the Jordan Rules,” is a first-person account of the 1990/1991 season, which was a watershed moment in the lives of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Three years after losing in the playoffs to the “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons, the Bulls finally broke through and swept the Pistons in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, on route to their first NBA championship and their first NBA title.
When the film was published, it sparked a lot of controversy because of its frank depiction of Jordan’s relationship with his teammates, his fixation with becoming the league’s top scorer, and his inability to throw the ball in crunch time.
Even almost three decades after its first publication, this book remains a must-read for anybody interested in learning more about Michael Jordan.

The Last Season – Phil Jackson

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Phil Jackson is no stranger to being in the spotlight, having spent nine seasons coaching gigantic personalities through adversity and controversy amid a media hothouse where every move is another headline, another installment in the soap opera basketball. Not even six championships with the Bulls of Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, and Scottie Pippen, nor three previous championships with the Lakers of Shaq and Kobe Bryant could have prepared him for the Lakers’ 2003-2004 season, which was a high-wire act unlike any other in the history of sports in Hollywood.
According to Jackson’s book, The Last Season: A Team in Search of Its Soul, the Lakers’ dynasty’s last season was a rollercoaster ride that ended with a whimper as the season came to a close.

When the Garden Was Eden – Harvey Araton

Harvey Araton, a New York Times sports columnist, delivers a fascinating look at the 1970s New York Knicks—part autobiography, part sports history, and part epic—set against the tumultuous era when Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, and Bill Bradley reigned supreme in the world of basketball. In the tradition of The Boys of Summer and The Bronx Is Burning, Araton delivers a fascinating look at the 1970s New York Knicks—part
Araton’s revealing story of the Knicks’ heyday is far more than a review of one of basketball’s most remarkable teams’ inspiring stories—it is, at its core, a stirring recreation of a time and place when the NBA championships defined the American dream. Perfect for readers of Jeff Pearlman’s The Bad Guys Won!, Peter Richmond’s Badasses, and Pat Williams’s Coach Wooden, Araton’s revealing story of the Knicks’ heyday
