Fun Baseball Drills for 7 Year Olds

Unless you make a game funny or interesting to you, you cannot properly do well, especially in a baseball game. Coaches know this and they categorize their drill sessions into several sections. The most familiar drills are- throwing, fielding, batting, and running. Fun baseball drills are usually some funny and interesting provisions of baseball coaching. Kids are stubborn, reckless, love adventure, and challenge, smart enough nowadays. To maintain them in their way, a coach/trainer must have to make the training funny. According to the above sections, a coach can do the following.

Throwing Drills

Here a group of kids practices throwing balls. A coach’s duty is to throw a ball towards a 7-year-old kid using hands or pitching machines. Soft baseballs are used in this session. First, a minimum level of the throw is accomplished to kids. Then after 10/15 throws, the distance between the thrower and catcher changes. On and off a coach split his/her thrower group into two sections. And both parts play randomly on the ground. In this joint, both team throwers have a lot of fun and many challenges. Their hands get more robust, rigid, perfect, and stiffer.

Fielding Drills

Fielders are of two kinds- infielder and outfielder. Infielders have to throw balls faster and outfielders have to catch or pick the ball quicker. Groupwise training is better however if not possible, individual drills can be launched. Here a coach throws balls higher and an outfielder has to grab the fly balls. Likewise, an infielder has to snatch the ball quicker and throw as fast as possible towards the basemen.

Batting Drills

Most kids of 7-year-old like to be a hitter than a pitcher. So, coaches enhance more kids in this batting section. Using both pitching machines and pitchers, a coach conducts the whole training session feasibly. Kids love hitting and the coach helps a lot doing that. As the kid hits the ball far, pitching deliveries get quicker and speedy exponentially.

Running Drills

Running is interesting for kids because they’re not gonna be lazy or idle all the time. Especially, 7-year-olds are stubborn enough as well as adventurous. A running drill means kinda practice of running between bases. In a baseball game, there are three bases, a good distance from one another, and have to travel around all three. A coach selects the best runners and slim kids because they run faster. Then he/she starts some drills with them from base to base. Recently, lots of coaching materials are available everywhere like obstacles, markers, ropes, indicators, etc. This stuff helps a lot during drills.

Baseball Hitting Drills

Baseball is a game of hitters mostly. Each team consists of 13-16 players and among them, the best 9 players play in-field. So, a baseball team basically created by 10-11 hitters at least. The catcher or keeper is also a hitter. Pitchers have strong throwing hands so they rarely hit balls higher. Most infielders are contact hitters and outfielders are hard hitters.

Basic Steps

At first, a coach places the ball on a tee. This tee isn’t that of golf, instead, it is longer and adjustable according to a player’s height. Kids and more precisely, 7-year-olds are at the minimum range of 40-45 inches height. So a coach adjusts the tee level in the field of 30-35 inches. The steps are summarized here-

  • Place the ball on the tee. The tee should be stiffer, sturdy, immobile, and rigid.
  • Ask a hitter to stand in front of the tee holding a T-ball baseball bat.
  • Make sure the hitter can move and swing properly in both forward and reverse steps.
  • Forward steps mean one step forward and the same for reverse ones.
  • The barrel of the bat and the ball have to be aligned horizontally.
  • Ask the hitter to hit higher enough he/she can do.
  • Repeat the process until a player’s limitations/strengths.

Even if you follow all the steps, sometimes it is seen that some players can’t do well or can’t hit harder. Treat them as a contact hitter. Contact hitting is necessary also for dying moments of a game.Baseball Hitting Drills for 7-year-olds

Baseball Fielding Drills

This one is essential, most important. A match can be changed totally by the acute smart performance of fielders when the opposition has many hitters. Fielders are of 2 kinds- infielders and outfielders. Infielders have quicker hands to throw faster and outfielders have proper grabbing techniques. A coach or trainer trains kids to pick, pitch, and grab balls. Fielding drills mostly included by picking balls, throwing, and grabbing. How to throw a baseball towards a target, we’ve shown the earlier section. So we skip that here. We concentrate on picking and grabbing much in this section. To pick a ball quickly is mandatory. You definitely need slim skinny players for faster performance. That’s why most coaches emphasize lean, compact, taller players for fielders. The quick tips are-

  • Coach or pitching machine fly balls higher in the distance. Random players who are scattered all over the outfield will grab the ball.
  • Hand-eye coordination is essential for any fielder. When a ball is lofted or fly ball, outfielders should keep concentration on the ball with his/her hands ready to grab. To do the best performance, keep both hands open, attached palms, and closer to the chest line. Parallelly the eye on the ball.
  • For infielders, most balls reach to them as dragged or quicker. Kids have to practice more jumping here and there, sliding, stretching, and tiger moves. Pretty similar to the keeper in cricket games.
  • Grabbing a ball is smooth and hard. Seems like complicated, ah! No worries at all. For the first time, everything seems hard and non-professional. In days all would be flexible and comfy. Well, to grab a quicker ball, grabbing hand should be wide open and another hand in gloves/mitts. Here, body language and fitness work more than coordination. The more fit your body, the more chances to grab a ball quicker.
  • Dropped balls are crazy, honestly. Because a dropped or flipped ball comes like a fly ball but later it starts dragging on the ground. Here also the body movement is essential. Don’t jump when these types of ball reach towards you. Slide a bit from your position, get a space to swing around, keep an eye on balls, grab softly, and throw quickly. Rolling balls occasionally injure player’s fingers so keep cautious about that.

Trainers and coaches teach a 7-year-old kid how to move horizontally in a speedy way, firstly. Later on, these kids are ready to learn how to catch or grab a ball with safety. The most conventional method or technique in catching drills are-

  • Use a slower, low-height pitching machine to pitch a ball towards a keeper or a catcher.
  • Pitch the ball with lower speed and increase exponentially to figure out a player’s potential.
  • Hand orientation is a major factor for any catcher. Wrong hand catching causes defeat in a game even. So a right-arm player should enhance his/her capabilities with right arms. Likewise, a left-arm player should emphasize on left arms.
  • A trainer has to teach a catcher for better hand-eye coordination. A catcher watches a ball clearly, get his/her hand in that ball direction, and grab quickly. Hand-eye coordination is the most important thing for any catcher and pretty unignorable. You can check also Best Baseball Bat for Coach Pitch
