What is Launch Angle?

The vertical angle at which the ball departs a player’s bat after being hit is represented by the term “Launch Angle.” It is possible to determine the average launch angle, which is derived by dividing the sum of all launch angles by the total number of batted ball events.
As a general rule, the following are the Launch Angles for various sorts of contact:

  • Ground ball: Less than 10 degrees
  • Line drive: 10-25 degrees
  • Fly ball: 25-50 degrees
  • Pop up: Greater than 50 degrees

The average launch angle may tell us a lot when it comes to hitting tendencies and behaviors. It is feasible to get a high average launch angle with a high average launch angle.

What We’ve Learned about Launch Angle and Baseball

Over the previous several years, hitting instructors, players, and front office staff have gained much knowledge regarding Launch Angles and what they represent. A ball is hit at a certain Exit Velocity (the ball’s speed comes off the bat). A certain Launch Angle in Major League Baseball and the data collected allows them to predict how far the ball will travel and the likelihood of a hit, out, or home run based on the data collected.
Consequently, a new statistic is known as “Barrels” has evolved due to this.
In a classification developed by Tom Tango, the Barrel classification is assigned to batted-ball events whose comparable hit types (in terms of exit velocity and launch angle) have resulted in an at-bat average and slugging percentage of at least.500 and 1.500, respectively since Statcast was implemented across the Major Leagues in 2015.
Batting average and slugging percentage for balls given to the Barreled classification in the 2016 regular season were.822 and 2.38, respectively, during the regular season of 2016.
To be considered Barreled, a hit ball must have an exit velocity of at least 98 mph. Balls with a launch angle between 26 and 30 degrees always get the Barreled classification while traveling at that speed. The range of launch angles increases according to the increase in rate over 98 mph.
As an illustration: When hit between 25 and 31 degrees, a ball traveling 99 mph always receives the designation of ‘Barreled.’ Add one more mile per hour – to achieve 100 mph — and the temperature range expands by three degrees, reaching 24-33 degrees.
Every extra mile per hour above 100 miles per hour extends the range by two to three degrees until an exit velocity of 116 miles per hour is achieved. The Barreled label is awarded to any ball with a launch angle ranging between eight and fifty degrees when it reaches that threshold.

After learning so much about exit velocity and launch angle in baseball, what do we know about them in softball, where the more extensive and heavier ball is, and the fences are considerably shorter?
Over the last two years, my mission has been to gather statistics and understand all I can about launch angles in connection to softball, and I’ve made significant progress. I’d want to share some of the things I’ve learned with you now.
In my experience, the majority of the batters I work with who hit the most significant proportion of home runs had a maximum exit velocity of 76-82 mph and an average exit velocity in the 64-plus range. Even though you don’t necessarily need to smash the ball so hard to hit a home run, With no wind and ordinary weather conditions (humidity, etc.), you can hit a ball 63mph at 31 degrees; It will barely make it over a four-foot-high 200-foot fence if the ball is hit at 31 degrees. Using the identical ball and a 3-degree launch angle, the ball will go 85 feet in the air and not make it out of the infield.
Most of the definitions of a ground ball, line drive, and fly out from the Major League Baseball Glossary still hold in softball. An angle of 10-14 degrees is usually required to smash the ball over the head of an infielder. Infielders’ height varies depending on where the ball is placed on the field and how high the pitch is (haha). The same “Barrels” idea holds in softball for hit balls. However, the link between exit velocity and velocity is substantially different, as I’ve discovered. When it comes to softball, you don’t have to hit the ball 98 miles per hour to get it out of the park (the hardest softball I’ve ever seen recorded is 85 miles per hour).

Softball Barrels

To be classified as “Barrels” in softball (which results in a.500 average and a 1.500 SLG percent), a hit ball must travel at a speed of at least 67 miles per hour and have a launch angle ranging from 20 to 38 degrees. Because most softball fields have 200/220-foot fences, the range of launch angles is much broader in softball. The greater the distance between the wall and the ball, the harder it is to strike the ball, and the narrower the launch angle spectrum window becomes.
Home runs in softball are most often hit with a launch angle of around 26 degrees. A softball hit at 70 miles per hour and 26 degrees is sent 235 feet into the air… In practically every park, he is a no-doubter.

“But Coach Lisle…I’m not a Home Run Hitter.”

This is a standard answer I get. This is the problem. A decent swing (the swing that The Hitting Vault teaches) will result in an average Launch Angle for most batters of 17-20 degrees, the majority of them. (Within that line drive range, at least.) When I say “average,” I’m referring to the fact that there will be a lot of 25-35s and a lot of 5-15s as well.
In this case, the batter “tries” to smash home runs by concentrating on boosting their average launch angle to 25 or higher, but his misses end up in the 35-45 area, the batter must hit the ball hard every time, or he will be the leading cause of warning track flyouts in the whole nation.
Combining a solid line drive swing and a moderate amount of swing power (63mph+) results in more home runs. As long as batters recognize that their primary concentration should be on line drives rather than home runs, they will be on the right road to success.

Are Ground Balls Bad?

This is not always the case. The harder you hit a ball (, the higher the exit velocity), the greater your chances of reaching first base are. This is true regardless of what Launch Angle you choose to strike the ball with the ball. However, when you get through 12U softball, and the infielders don’t make as many mistakes, their arms become more muscular and cover more territory. If a ground ball has a launch angle of less than 8 (except slappers), it is typically swallowed up, and the batter is out unless he hits one through a hole in the wall.

Alright, Coach Lisle, this is great, but what should I do with this information? What now?

No, this is not always the case! You have a greater probability of reaching base if you hit the ball harder (higher exit velocity). This is true regardless of the Launch Angle at which you strike it. The infielders’ arms get more robust, and they can cover more territory as the game progresses through 12U softball and commit fewer mistakes. If a ground ball has a launch angle of less than 8 (except slappers), it is typically swallowed up, and the batter is out unless the ball is shot through a hole in the wall.

  • Angle Toss
  • Bat Path Drill
  • Get On Plane Drill

– For hitters who you believe already have a terrific swing and who regularly achieves a good line drive launch angle but are not hitting the ball as hard as they might, work on turning the body and using lower body motions to their advantage. The following are some of my favorite Hitting Vault Drills for this:

  • Separation Drill
  • Full Turns
  • Med Ball Toss
  • Lower Body Coil
  • The Hitting Vault Bat Speed program

What about Attack Angle?

One of the metrics you may work on and concentrate on for swing path is Attack Angle if you have a Zepp, Blast Motion, or Diamond Kinetics bat sensor, which can be found here:
In the case of a groundball, the barrel’s attack angle is typically between -15 and 0. On the other hand, the attack angle on a line drive ranges from +5 to +20 degrees. The barrel’s attack angle is typically between +20 and +35 degrees on a flyball. We aim to approach from an angle of around 10 degrees.
According to statistics, the majority of professional hitters maintain a steady attack angle ranging between +8 and +12 degrees. Amateurs typically struggle to get through the ball and have a negative attack angle when they hit it.
Launch Angles are becoming more popular in baseball and softball, and you’ll hear more and more about them from commentators, coaches, and batters. The following three factors should be taken into consideration while developing an excellent swing:

  • Exit velocity to the greatest extent possible
  • Exit velocity on the average
  • When striking, the average launch angle is used (especially in the cage).
