  • Batting average (AVG)
  • On-base percentage (OBP)
  • Slugging percentage (SLG)

This can assist increase the average number of your batting, but not necessarily because of a high QAB score. QAB is more about utilizing baseball rules for your benefit.

A current ECU head coach Cliff gave the simplest but the greatest description of a QAB.

“A Quality At-Bat is an at-bat that makes a positive contribution towards our team goals”.

On the contrary, we may call this positive contribution a productivity at Bat, since most people refer to QAB as the percentage score of these productive bats.

I often get asked how to define a quality at-bat

Cliff Godwin, a former Ole Miss assistant coach and current East Carolina University head coach, gave me the greatest description I have ever heard of. He stated, “A Quality at Bat is a fight which contributes positively to our team objectives.”

There are several methods to have a QAB:

  1. Hit & Run, Bunt bag, Drag bag, Squeeze
  2. Hit Walk, HBP or Catcher Interference Running a bunt
  3. Shift from 2nd base to 3rd base with 0 outs
  4. Drive from 3rd base with less than 2 outs
  5. Any RBI (Sac fly, 2 RBI out…)
  6. Every ball struck hard (NOTE: All base hits are not QAB hits. We want to get in touch with HARD!)
  7. 8+ at-bats pitch
  8. When you are behind 0-2, you may see 4 or more pitches

He also stated that the team’s target is 54 percent bats quality each game and an average of 500 QAB at the conclusion of the season.

QAB Lets You Know If A Player Is Really Good

Of course, there are a number of data used by baseball leaders to assess players’ offensive performance. You undoubtedly know most of them as a fan or player yourself. Maybe you think that a great player is someone who generates a high batting average or 20 or more homes in a season.

Players that “put such statistics” are excellent, but it may surprise you that the second baseman or shortstop whose medium batting average is poor may be more valuably than the first base player who seems to be on the base two or three times a game.

This is because players with moderate or even poor averages of batting may produce extremely high QABs. Now, a QAB represents quality at Bat. And the metric identifies a position player better than anybody else and establishes a team’s real worth.

This is why: By definition, quality at Bat (QAB) is a plate appearance in which the hitters (or batters) accomplish a variety of objectives, which all assist the team throughout a game.

QAB Can Be Defined In All Of The Following Ways

Baseball management describe a quality at Bat in many ways. All of them are important since they assist to decide the result of a single game. Consider …

  • A quality at Bat happens when a hitter strikes him two times and manages, for at least three more pitches, to prolong the plate appearance. In doing so, the batter forces the pitcher to use more energy, which may weaken and leave the pitcher more susceptible to the next batteries.
  • A quality at Bat occurs when it lasts for six or more pitches. As in the previous scenario, the more pitches a rival hurler throws, the weaker and more susceptible he is likely to become to other batters in the line-ups.
  • A quality at Bat is one in which the hitter hits a slaughter fly producing a run.
  • A Batt Quality (and one that a team management likes) occurs when a hitter gets a two-out clutch that allows a runner to score.

There is additional quality at Bats which helps a team to win, but they do not lead to runs over the home plate. They include a sacrifice bunt that leads a rider from the first to the next base, where he may score on a single base. A hard-hit ball is also considered quality at Bat, since it gives the batter and his teammates a signal that the opposing pitcher fatigues and is easier to hit.

Interestingly, some individuals in baseball even utilize a Quality at-Bat method to assess player performance. At first sight, it may seem complicated, but it is really simple to grasp and may assist a team management to always discover and create a plans for success.

The Formula Of Quality At-Bats

There is a different method for baseball managers to assess quality at Bats while assessing individual players and team performance. Here’s how it looks…

2 strikes at bats with three or more pitches thrown + 6 pitches at bats + a hard- hit basisball (or ‘hart out,’) + a 2 out RBI (run batted in) + a bunt sacrifice for an operator to scoring position + a sacrifice fly which advances a competitor or produces a race divided by the total number of PAs (plate appearances).

This simple formula informs you or your management how effective you are as an offensive baseball player in plain English. It may help you become a better player, since it exposes your shortcomings so you may strengthen your team and contribute more.

More significantly however, QAB enables a team management to look for and identify the kind of players who ensure success.

Quality in bats is the most essential element of the hitting game, irrespective of age or level. You measure success like the best if you want to be the best.

According to Coaches Corner, the quality of the bat is recorded in four ways:

No. 1: Hit the ball forcefully, irrespective of the result – all line drives are hard hits. Difficult hits include groundballs and flyballs which require outfielders to retreat.

No. 2: Draw a walk – It’s the approach of the Money Ball. Recall the ancient adage, “A stroll is as good as a hit.” It’s true. It’s true.

No. 3: Run – Sacrifice, move the runner to the third, drive a run home with less than two outs, hit and ride, play squeeze etc. If you receive the plate, you have a job, so do it.

No. four: Counting — Any bat consuming six or more pitches is of bat quality, irrespective of the result.

Your goal should be 60 percent bats, with hard hit balls at least 40 percent. Certainly, these percentages are difficult to reach, but most players will be 50% and 30%.

  • The game finishes as a winner, scoring from third base like a basket, stolen base, passed ball, wild pitch, mistake; you are replaced by a pinch-hitter in the midst of a batting turn (depends on certain circumstances, like you are put back after 2 strikes against you while the pinch hitter striking out as well)

TWO QUALITY AT-BATS PRINCIPLES

Remember this if you only remember two things.

  1. 90% of the hit is the way you feel when you step on the plate.
  2. Every hitter has two guys.

Trustworthy player & Non-trustful player.

Now I know why God has put me for thirteen years at Triple-A. Helping young hitters get away by shifting their concept of plate success from the average batting to hits…to Quality At-Bats and hit the ball hard.

You win if you strike the ball hard.

It’s a bonus if you get a hit. Believe it. Believe it.

If you love your skills, but you don’t show up, it’s not your responsibility. This is your mind. This is your mind. Get it right! Get it right!
